Thinking of moving to a new home? Whether your new home is a few blocks away or halfway across the country, moving is a big decision that will require plenty of thought and planning. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind when preparing for a big move.

Research your options in moving companies. Your choice in movers will have a lot to do with how smoothly the entire move will go. Check out as many different moving companies as you can, working off a list of recommendations supplied by people you know and trust. This will give you a good idea of the rates and services of the different moving companies, making it possible for you to make an informed decision.

Allot enough time for packing. Make sure you plan for sufficient organization and packing time, and allot a couple of extra days at the end. In most cases, you won't really know how much work is involved until you start actually packing up your items. Ideally, you will want to be done with your packing a couple of days before the movers are set to arrive. This way, you avoid rushing and you will have sufficient time to ensure that the packing is done properly.

Get organized. Before you start stuffing items into boxes haphazardly, plan out which items will go where and with what. You will generally want fragile items to go together, and bulky and heavy items to go into their separate boxes. It might be helpful to draw up a list of all your things to be packed at this point. This will also make it easier for you to figure out if all your stuff made the move to your new home safely.

Double-check. This is where the importance of preplanning and proper scheduling comes in. Ideally, you should have enough time to pack everything up and be able to check it a day or two before the movers are set to arrive for pickup. Working off the list you prepared earlier, check to see that all your items are where they belong and that they are packed safely and securely. By taking this extra bit of precaution, you will help ensure that all your items will arrive at your new home safely when packing day comes around.
